Life and the Washing of Feet (Reimagined)

Man: “Why would YOU make this journey painful?”

GOD:

“Watch for me.

I AM: that one who washes your feet along the way—the constancy beneath your becoming, the still point holding time even as seasons break your soul (Hebrews 13:8).

I AM: the understanding at the heart of it all. That silent root from which all words and wounds arise. Augustine epiphany’s:“You were within me, and I was not with you.”

I AM: the sip of water in the parched desert. The wilderness whisper that brings you to your hunger. The moment when the Prodigal “comes to himself” and remembers the Father’s house. The first taste of grace that purges demons and softens dust (Deut 8; Ps 42).

I AM: the avalanche of Love that overflows. The unexpected eruption of gratitude and humility. When the prodigal is embraced and the older son’s heart is stirred to wonder. When Augustine’s soul learns: “late as I loved you, Lord, you were already here.”

I AM: ribboned throughout the rhythm of the day. In the hush between spoken words, where understanding takes root.In the gentle weight of a hand placed on a weary shoulder.

Pay attention in prayer, and wash.

As you have been received, so receive. As you have been forgiven, so forgive. As you have been loved, so bend. (John 13:15)
